(HEMX) said five clinical sites received approval to take part in a protocol using its Ampligen drug to treat patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. In a press release, Hemispherx said the Food and Drug Administration has approved cost recovery for the protocol, meaning patients reimburse the company for the cost of the drug. The drug costs $2,100 for the first eight weeks of treatment and $2, 400 for each eight weeks thereafter. Hemispherx is developing Ampligen for possible restoration of physical and cognitive functions of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, estimated to afflict 500,000 to 2 million people in the U.S. Hemispherx is a biopharmaceutical company.
